Maxwell is a boss added in Revelations Chapter Two, and can be found in Tomb.

Behavior

Upon entering the boss room, the player will see two springs: one normal and one sprung up. In order to start the bossfight, the player must use the regular spring and jump on top of the sprung up spring and put it back into place. Maxwell will then appear and the bossfight will begin.

Phase 1 (above 25% Health).

  • Maxwell peeks out of the top door and shoots three split shots at the player. These tears can bounce off of a wall once.
  • Maxwell peeks out of the left or right doors, jumps out and leaps in the middle of the room, shooting a 4 tear shot at the player before jumping in the door on the opposite side. These tears can bounce off of a wall once.
  • Maxwell peeks out of the top door and shoots a large tear downwards at the player, leaving creep where it goes. Upon hitting a wall, the large tear breaks into six tears, three that go left and three that go right.
  • Maxwell peeks out of the top door and fires a large sweep of tears throughout the room.
    • As Maxwell reaches the end of this attack, he takes a quick breath, allowing a window of space for the player to easily dodge the attack.
  • Occasionally, the panels on the floor will swap to resemble elevators and spawn either a Rag Gaper, Rag Bony, or an Arrowhead.
  • Occasionally, Maxwell will throw a few troll bombs at the player from the top door.
  • Occasionally, the panels on the floor will swap to resemble Tomb Traps. Stepping on the panels will have the doors on the right and left produce whatever effect the panel displays that corresponds to the actual Tomb Traps.
    • During this attack, Maxwell may appear under one of the panels, and will start throwing troll bombs at the player. He may also throw troll bombs from the top door.
      • If the player steps on the panel while Maxwell is under it, Maxwell will stop throwing troll bombs and will take damage.
  • Occasionally, a large bubble tear will float in the middle of the room. Maxwell will come out of the right or left doors and jump on it, causing a large amount of tears to be sent out randomly in the room. These tears can bounce off of walls.
  • Occasionally, the right and left doors will line up, and a brimstone laser will form between them as they begin to move up and down the room. The laser will get increasingly faster as the attack continues. The panels on the floor will swap to springs, and the player must use the springs to avoid the brimstone laser.
    • During this attack, Maxwell remains in the top door, occasionally firing a single tear at the player.
  • Occasionally, the panels will open up and change color, the left one being blue and the right one being orange. Maxwell will constantly be falling through these panels, teleporting to the other panel as he falls through one. Each time he teleports he fires a 3 tear shot at the player. These tears can bounce off of a wall once.

Phase 2 (below 25% Health).

  • The top door begins firing a brimstone laser and starts moving left and right through the room. The panels on the floor will swap to springs, and the player must use the springs to avoid the brimstone laser. This attack persists for the remainder of the fight
    • During this attack, Maxwell will come out of the right or left doors each time the laser changes directions. He will jump out of the door, sending a large burst of tears towards the player. Maxwell will bounce on both springs and jump to the door on the other side. If the player collides with Maxwell while both of them are in the air, Maxwell will catch the player and instantly throw him back on the ground.

Champion Versions

  • Champion: Maxwell now has red eyes and his horns have been broken off, this time you only have to step on the low spring as opposed to using it to weigh down the upper spring and start the fight.
    • Maxwell mostly spends to fight jumping in place on one spring before alternating to the other side while spitting a cone of 5 bouncing bullets at Isaac.
    • Occasionally the springs turn into traps and Maxwell will rapidly jump between the two traps, setting off various traps from both sides of the room.
    • In one attack the central door will fire a stationary brimstone laser, dividing the room. At which point Maxwell will trigger various traps such as a wide room covering fire, a sweep of bullets or multiple boulders that will sometimes require the spring on the player's side of the room to jump over.

Notes

  • During a few of Maxwell's attacks, the panels on the floor may be left open. If the player falls in them, they will take damage and be thrown back out of them.
  • If the player lingers in the boss room at the start and doesn't start the fight, the door on the left will spit out a note that will bounce on the right spring. If the player grabs the note, it will appear on their screen, saying "Took you a while -Maxwell"
    • This is to help new players figure out how to start the fight.

Trivia

  • Maxwell is based off of the thought experiment "Maxwell's Demon". In the experiment, created by James Clerk Maxwell, a demon controlls the door to two separate rooms. The first room, having hot molecules and cold molecules, and the other room having nothing. The experiment suggests that if a demon were to open the door and allow a heat molecule to enter and then immediately shut the door, not allowing any cold molecules to pass through (hotter molecules are faster than colder molecules), the second law of thermodynamics (entropy in the universe is always increasing) would be incorrect; as the second room would become hot, while the original room became cold, decreasing entropy.
    • This inspiration can be mostly seen in the use of the doors in Maxwell's boss fight.
  • The attack that has Maxwell teleporting through the blue and orange panels is a reference to the Valve game, Portal.
  • Maxwell's champion is named "Craxwell".
  • If Maxwell's health reaches 0 while jumping on a spring, one of the panels will open up and he'll jump into it, revealing it to actually be a blender which shreds him to bits.
